AI Smart Grading
This article helps you turn on AI Grading for Short Answer and Multiple Short Answer questions in a quiz. Set the scoring points, let the system score submitted answers, then review and change scores in Batch Grading.
Overview
Open-ended exam questions usually need to be read and scored one by one. AI Grading matches each answer to the scoring points you set and assigns a score automatically. You can then review the results by question or by examinee, so scoring stays consistent with less repeat reading.
Use Cases
- Score many short answers from the same points, then spot-check the results.
- Reuse an answer explanation you already wrote as the grading standard.
- Set a separate standard for each row when a Multiple Short Answer question asks for different points.
Feature Access
AI Grading is available on Short Answer and Multiple Short Answer questions in a quiz. It stays off until you turn it on.
1. Create a quiz and add a Short Answer or Multiple Short Answer question.

2. Open the question settings and find AI Grading.

3. Turn it on. Until you do, score that question manually in Batch Grading.

Set the Standard for a Short Answer
After you turn it on, write the points AI should use. These can be the answer explanation, the correct answer, or the response requirements.
1. Type the scoring points in the grading standard.
2. If you already wrote an answer explanation, set it as the grading standard in one click.

3. Save the question. After an examinee submits, the system scores the answer against that standard.
Set the Standard for a Multiple Short Answer
A Multiple Short Answer question is scored by row. Enter a grading standard for each row title.
1. Turn on AI Grading for the question.

2. Under each row title, enter the scoring points for that row.

3. Save. The system matches and scores each row on its own standard.
See the Automatic Score
After an examinee submits, questions with AI Grading are scored automatically. The response shows AI grading. AI marking requires a certain amount of time, and answers will not be generated instantly.

In Batch Grading, these questions show an AI grading mark so you can tell them apart from questions that still need a manual score.

Review and Change Scores
When scoring finishes, open Batch Grading and check the scores. Use the same entries as manual grading: click Batch Grading at the top-right or bottom-left of View/Download Responses, or at the bottom-left of a transcript dialog.
1. Switch between Grade by question and Grade by examinee.
2. Open Graded to see questions AI has already scored.
3. To adjust a score, change it directly in Graded and save.

4.If the scoring standards have been modified, you can click AI Re-grading on marked questions to initiate re-evaluation.
When marking by question, click AI Re-grading at the top right corner to re-mark all already graded answers under this question.

When marking by examinee, click **AI Re-grade** beside the relevant question to trigger re-marking for this question.

Grade Responses Collected Earlier
If responses arrived before you turned AI Grading on, go back to the quiz editor, set the standard, and turn AI Grading on. What happens next depends on whether the quiz is still collecting responses.
1. The quiz is still collecting: responses already collected are graded automatically.
2. Collection has stopped: open Batch Grading. The question shows an AI Grading entry. Click it to grade the collected responses for that question.
Grading Quota
A free account includes 20 AI grading uses. After that, upgrade: a monthly plan includes 500 uses, and a yearly plan includes 6,000 uses.
When the quota runs out, the quiz stops automatic scoring. Grade those questions manually in Batch Grading.
Important Notes
- AI Grading applies only to Short Answer and Multiple Short Answer questions in a quiz, and it is off until you turn it on.
- For a Short Answer, type a standard or apply the answer explanation in one click. For a Multiple Short Answer, set a standard for each row title.
- Review AI scores in Graded inside Batch Grading. You can change a score there.
- If you turn AI Grading on later, a quiz that is still collecting grades existing responses automatically. A quiz that has stopped collecting needs the AI Grading entry in Batch Grading.
- Free accounts include 20 uses, a monthly plan includes 500, and a yearly plan includes 6,000. When the quota runs out, score manually.
FAQs
Why was the answer not scored automatically?
Confirm that you turned AI Grading on for that question and saved a grading standard. Automatic scoring also stops when the quota runs out.
Can I change a score that AI assigned?
Yes. Open Graded in Batch Grading and edit the score for that question.
Will responses submitted before I turned this on still be graded?
Yes. If the quiz is still collecting, those responses are graded automatically after you save the setting. If collection has stopped, open Batch Grading and click AI Grading for that question.
How is a Multiple Short Answer different from a Short Answer?
A Short Answer uses one grading standard, and you can apply the answer explanation in one click. A Multiple Short Answer needs a standard for each row title.
What happens to questions that already have AI Grading when I run out of uses?
The quiz stops automatic scoring. Upgrade your plan, or score those questions manually in Batch Grading.
