Moral Scenario Survey

You will be given four scenarios and asked what you would do in each scenario. All answers will be given on a 6 point scale, in which 1 represents that you would definitely not do something, and 6 represents you would definitely do something. There are no right or wrong answers; we are just interested in what you think. Your responses will be kept wholly anonymous, and no identifying information will be collected.

Three men are trapped in the second-floor apartment of a house during a category 5 hurricane. A woman is trapped in the first-floor apartment. The ceiling of the apartment is leaking, and water is accumulating on the second floor so fast that the three men on the second floor are going to drown before any rescue comes, while the woman on the first floor would survive. The first floor and the second floor are only connected by a small pipe, which, if opened, would direct all the water on the second floor to the first, causing the woman on the first floor to drown, while the three men on the second floor would survive. The valve that opens the pipe is located on the exterior of the house. Would you open the valve to avoid the deaths of the three men?
Definitely wouldn't open

A tiger from a zoo is attacking humans, and people are escaping the tiger attack by hiding in metal cages. Three women are in an open cage, Cage 1, while one man is in a cage with a closed gate, Cage 2. As the tiger approaches, the gate protects the man in Cage 2 from being eaten by the tiger, while the three women in Cage 1 are going to be killed. Pressing the button located next to the cages would allow the gate to slide, opening Cage 2 and closing Cage 1, causing the man in Cage 2 to be eaten by the tiger, while the three women in Cage 1 survive. Would you press the button to avoid the deaths of the three women in Cage 1?

A runaway trolley is heading down a track toward three men who are tied on the track. The three men will be killed if the trolley runs on its present course. A footbridge is located over the track, in between the approaching trolley and the three men. On this footbridge is a trapdoor, where a woman stands on top. A lever located next to the track controls the trapdoor. If the lever is pulled, the trapdoor would open, causing the woman to be dropped on the track below, where her body would block the trolley. The woman will die if you pull the lever, but the three men will be saved. Would you pull the lever in order to save the three men?

You are the late-night watchman in a hospital. Due to an accident in the building next door, there are deadly fumes rising up through the hospital's ventilation system. In a room of the hospital are three female patients. If you do nothing the fumes will rise up into the room and cause the deaths of the three patients. The only way to prevent the deaths of these patients is to hit a certain switch, which would open a door to allow a male technician access into the ventilation system. The technician will be able to stop the fumes from entering the patient’s room, but he himself would die by inhaling too much fumes while working. Would you hit the switch in order to avoid the deaths of the three female patients?
